Crafting Lavender Paper – How To Make

Hello and Welcome!

Have you ever thought about making your own paper?

There’s something truly magical about creating something beautiful from scratch, and today, I’m excited to share with you the wonderful world of lavender paper making. Not only is it a fun and creative activity, but it also has so many uses, from personalised stationery to unique gift tags.

So, grab a cuppa, and let’s get started on this crafty adventure!

Essential Materials and Tools

To get started with your lavender paper, you’ll need the following essentials:

  • Recycled paper: Any old newspapers, junk mail, or printer paper will do.
  • Water: To soak and blend the paper.
  • Lavender buds: Dried lavender for that lovely scent and decorative touch.
  • Blender: For pulping the paper.
  • Mould and deckle: A frame for forming the paper sheets
  • Sponges and towels: To help press and dry the paper.

Optional Ingredients for Customisation

  • Other dried flowers and herbs: For added texture and fragrance.
  • Natural dyes: To give your paper some colour.
  • Essential oils: A few drops can enhance the scent of your paper.

Tips for Sourcing Materials

For recycled paper, simply raid your recycling bin! Lavender buds and other flowers can be found at craft stores or online. Personally, I love sourcing unique flowers and herbs from local markets – it adds a special touch to the final product.

1. Preparing the Pulp

First things first, we need to make the pulp. Tear your recycled paper into small pieces and soak them in water for a few hours, or even overnight. Once the paper is thoroughly soaked, it’s time to blend. Add the soaked paper and some fresh water into a blender and blend until you get a smooth pulp. Now, add your dried lavender buds to the mix. The amount is up to you, but I’d say about a handful per blender full of pulp works well.

2. Forming the Paper

Next, it’s time to form your paper. Place your mould and deckle together and submerge them in a water basin. Pour the pulp mixture over the screen, ensuring it spreads evenly. Gently shake the mold to distribute the pulp, then lift it out of the water, letting the excess drain away. The pulp should start forming a thin layer on the screen.

3. Pressing and Drying the Paper

Now, we need to press out the excess water. Place a piece of felt or a towel over the pulp and use a sponge to press down, soaking up as much water as possible. Carefully lift the newly formed sheet from the screen and place it on a drying rack or another piece of felt to dry. It’s best to leave it to dry completely for about 24 hours.

4. Adding Decorative Elements

While your paper is still wet, you can add some decorative elements. Sprinkle some extra-dried lavender buds, or press in some small flowers and herbs. You can add a few drops of natural dye to the pulp before forming the sheets for a bit of colour.

5. Finishing the Paper

Once your paper is dry, it’s time to trim and smooth the edges. Use For an extra fragrant touch, add a few drops of lavender or other essential oils to the pulpscissors or a craft knife to tidy up the sides. If you want your paper to be extra smooth, gently sand the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Store your finished sheets in a cool, dry place to keep them looking their best.

Customisation is where you can really let your creativity shine. Here are some ideas to make your lavender paper truly unique:

  • Different Flowers and Herbs: Mix in dried rose petals, chamomile, or rosemary for various textures and scents.
  • Essential Oils: For an extra fragrant touch, add a few drops of lavender or other essential oils to the pulp.
  • Themed Paper: Create different styles for different occasions. For example, use red rose petals for romantic stationery or green herbs for a fresh, spring feel.
Handmade LAVENDER paper

Lavender paper isn’t just beautiful; it’s also incredibly beneficial:

  • Aromatherapy and Relaxation: The scent of lavender is known for its calming properties, making your paper perfect for writing heartfelt letters or creating relaxing art.
  • Eco-Friendly and Sustainable: Making paper from recycled materials is a great way to reduce waste and create something lovely.
  • Personal and Gift Uses: Handmade paper makes for unique stationery, gift tags, or framed art. Friends and family will appreciate the personal touch.

Making lavender paper is a delightful and rewarding craft. It’s not just about the end product but also the joy of creating something with your own hands. So, why not give it a go? Experiment with different ingredients and techniques to find your perfect blend. Happy crafting!
